Welcome to the idyllic Waldhof farm, a living example of the combination of family, livestock and work. On an area of 35 hectares, a diverse community of animals and plants thrives in harmony with nature. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening.
Martin Knechtle grew up on a farm and fulfilled a dream when he leased the Waldhof in Thurgau together with his brother Josef in 2018. Since then, they have been running the farm as brothers. The fact that he was able to combine his passion for animals and time with his wife and four children is the most valuable thing for him.
“There’s nothing better than working with the animals every day! My heart beats for cows and I’m happy about every new calf”
Diversity in the animal kingdom
The farm is home to an impressive herd of 54 cows, including the proud representatives of the Brown Swiss and Holstein breeds. These majestic animals are accompanied by two powerful bulls, which ensure a strong and healthy herd. Twelve playful calves complete the family. But one cow stands out in particular: Paola, the farm’s favorite cow. With her impressive output of 11,000 liters of milk per year, she is affec-tionately known as the “machine”.
In addition to the cows and calves, the Waldhof is also home to a colorful community of animals. A loyal dog, two proud sows, cats and even broiler chickens contribute to the farm’s lively atmosphere.
From pastureland to milk: sustainable farming on Martin’s farm
As the region around the farm is very flat, the land serves as an ideal basis for arable farming and as fod-der. The result is a cycle of healthy soil in which the cows play an important role. When the cows graze the grass, they improve the soil with their kicks and bites, which promotes grass growth and improves the soil structure. At the same time, the cows absorb nutrients from the grass and turn them into milk for us to enjoy. The cows’ manure serves as a natural fertilizer and nourishes the soil, which also promotes plant growth. This complex interaction helps to preserve and maintain the picturesque Swiss landscape.
Quality in figures
The Waldhof is proud to produce 450,000 kg of top-quality milk every year. This remarkable achievement reflects the careful care and dedication invested in every stage of milk production.
What does Martin like about his job? “Working with the animals is what I enjoy most. It also allows me to spend a lot of time with my family, as they are all on the farm and lend a hand where they can. Of course, it’s also great that I’m my own boss and can therefore work very independently.”
